Monument to the victims of Holodomor
Monument to the victims of Holodomor during ceremony of honouring of memory of victims of famine, in Kiev, on Saturday, November 27, 2010. The Holodomor was a man-made famine in the Ukrainian SSR, part of the Soviet famine of 1932-1933. During the famine, which is also known as the "terror-famine in Ukraine" and "famine-genocide in Ukraine", millions of Ukrainians died of starvation in a peacetime catastrophe unprecedented in the history of Ukraine. Conservative estimates of the total number of deaths within Soviet Ukraine in 1933 go as low as 2.6 million. Although some claims account for up to 10 million fatalities or more. However, the demographic deficit caused by unborn or unrecorded births allows for total net losses to be as high as 10 million. Photo by Aleksandr Sinitsa / UNIAN
